Yusof Ishak Secondary SChool was established in 1965 as Jubilee Integrated Secondary School. It was an integrated school offering secondary education to an enrolment of 984 pupils and 37 teachers of two streams, in English and Malay.
On 29 July 1966, then Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew declared open Yusof Ishak Secondary School (YISS) at Jubilee Road. We are the only school to be named after a President of our Republic.
In 1992, we became the first school to top the value-added ranking in both the Express and Normal Streams.
The new school building was officially opened on 29 July 2000 by Dr Ong Chit Chung, MP, Bukit Timah GRC.In Dec 1998, we moved to our Bukit Batok Campus. Our School is, therefore, 37 years old this year.
We are honoured to be named after the first President of Singapore, Encik Yusof Bin Ishak. Even though the physical learning environment posed a challenge, our students were undeterred in their quest for knowledge. On the contrary, the 'kampong feel', coupled with the support from the teachers, led them to greater heights of academic excellence.
The GPC Visit, 2nd October 1995
The school was honoured with the visit of Dr Ong Chit Chung and members of the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for Education. The committee was overwhelmed by the warmed, friendliness, excellent conduct and behaviour of Yusoffians and thoroughly impressed with the outstanding academic results and co-curricular activities despite the physical constraints on the 30 year old building.
"You have managed despite very limited facilities and resources, to give quality and value-addedness education to your students"
The findings made by Dr Ong Chit Chung's team paved the way for the school to move from the confined site at Jubilee Road to its current sprawling grounds in Bukit Batok. This marked a milestone in Yusof Ishak Secondary School's history.
