Yusof Ishak Secondary School
The First President School
Programme

Yusof Ishak Secondary School’s NT Programme aims to provide for its students an educational experience that goes beyond textbooks and touches more on discovering the hidden talent within the student as well as building up their self esteem and self confidence. Our NT Programme mainly involves the Elective Modules and Project Sirius.

Elective Modules

In Term 1, the Secondary 3 and 4 NT students underwent an Elective Module Programme where the students were exposed to a week long course on the module of their choice. The modules that were offered were Baking and Baristas, Fitness Training, Digital Music, Go Kart Maintenance and Fashion Design. On the last day of the course, the students presented what they had learnt to their teachers and fellow students at a mini-carnival held in the hall.

In Term 2, it was the Secondary 1 and 2 NT students turn to go through an Enrichment module. The duration of the modules was 2 hours per week for a total of 10 weeks. The Secondary 1 students had a choice of “Wire Sculpture” or “Hip Hop Dancing” while the Secondary 2 students could choose between “Clay Tiles” and “Jazz Dance”. At the end of their modules, the Secondary 1 and 2 dancers put up a showcase of their slick dance moves with teachers as their appreciative audience.

As we push on to Term 3, the Secondary 1 and 2 students will be given a choice of a Sports module or an Aesthetics Module. In the sports module, the participants will learn sports like bowling, golf and in-line skating while the aesthetics module provides training in hairstyling and beauty tips.

The Secondary 3 students meanwhile will be going through a programme that will provide a real-life context to the subjects that they are taking – Elements of Business Studies (EBS) and Computer Applications (CPA). The students taking EBS will be undergoing a programme that will give a more in-depth look on Tourism in Singapore while the students taking CPA will learn what goes into good web page design.

Project Sirius

The Secondary 3 NT students are also involved in Project Sirius where they learn about the skills needed to run a fund-raising project. The money raised will go towards funding NT activities. Their weekly one-hour lessons with the guidance of Mrs Elizabeth Chong, Mr Donavan Lau, Mr Freddy Kwek and Mr Aidil aim to equip them with the knowledge of how logistics, planning, distribution of tasks and budgeting is needed to run a  successful fund-raising event.  In the course of the project, students revisited the HEY values and were made aware of basic money sense.

The students sold canned drinks and snacks during the school sports day in their maiden attempt at fund-raising.  Come Term 3, they will be providing car wash services, running game stalls and selling handmade gifts for teachers and students in the school. In the end, we hope that the project will reinforce the HEY values, equip them with basic money sense and enable them to experience the value of persistence and resilience.
