Media Literacy Through Experience
YI MLE Programme aims to encourage media and critical literacy, particularly in the area of broadcast media, by taking students through the authentic experience of producing news reports and documentary features.
Through acting as writers, producers and presenters, students will be prompted to ask questions about purpose, audience and context, to examine events and issues from different points of view.
In the first year, students will produce a podcast; in the second year, students will produce a vodcast; and in the third year, students will produce a documentary. Project piloted with one class in 2006 doing the podcast. In 2007 there are 7 sec one classes embarking on the project and 2 sec two classes continuing onto year 2.
This provides an authentic context for language learning, where process, content and skills are integrated, and a meaningful learning experience for our students. Students are equipped with life skills and made aware of real-life experiences as they visit working radio and television stations and have a Media hub in which to work.
